Indian domain name market continued its growth, crossed 5 million mark in 2017: Zinnov report

The domain name registrations count in India reached a total of 5.3 million in 2017, with a growth rate of 7.1% year over year, according to ‘State of the Domain Name Industry in India’ report by Zinnov.

A domain name is an address that internet visitors use to reach a website. The domain name is also used for email accounts.

The report highlighted that the growth rate of domain name market in India is very higher as compared to 0.9% globally. The total number of domain name registrations worldwide were 332 million, as of December 2017.

“Initiatives led by the Indian government to improve the digital infrastructure and hasten adoption of digital services, coupled with increasing Internet user base and a flourishing base of technology-enabled SMBs, have helped India witness a faster growth in domain name adoption,” said Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov. “This has helped India outpace the world in domain name growth over the last few years.”

According to the report, around 57% of domain names registered in India were on the “.com” extension. A majority (70%) of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in India preferred “.com” over other top-level domains.

The companies believed that the “.com” domain extension was more trustworthy, provided global standards and professional image.

Zinnov surveyed 200 SMBs across three cities in India, and found that 75% of them chose domain name according to the name of company.

85% of the companies purchased domain names using the digital payment methods like debit/credit cards or net-banking.

As per the report, 48% of the domain names registered in India were used for creating websites, up to 11% for professional emails, and about 9% for creating mobile-enabled websites.

Maharashtra, Delhi/NCR, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka witnessed the highest growth in Indian domain name market, accounting for 50% of the total market share.
