DAILYHOSTNEWS, November 8, 2011 – RackSpace is taking its support for the OpenStack Cloud architecture beyond Cloud services in its own data centers and contributions to the open architecture’s development. The company will now provide managed services and operational support for customers that build private clouds in their own data centers using the open-source Cloud operating system.
OpenStack gives companies a flexible Cloud orchestration layer, access to future upgrades and compatibility with public Clouds built on the OpenStack architecture, according to Rackspace.
The new offering is called Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition. Companies certified to deploy the technology will help customers build private OpenStack clouds at data centers of the customers’ choosing, including several Equinix facilities around the world.
Certified deployment partners include CloudTP, MomentumSI and TeamSun.
Initial design of the private Rackspace clouds is based on OpenStack software configurations and hardware by Cisco and Dell. The company plans to expand these options in 2012 to include other technologies, including those developed by members of Facebook’s Open Compute Foundation. Rackspace was one of the foundation’s founding members.

Jim Curry, general manager of Rackspace Cloud Builders, said launch of Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition would extend the company’s model of winning business through a strong support offering into the customers’ own data centers.
“The customer is truly in control [of their OpenStack private Cloud] with no software license fees, technology lock-in or lengthy support contracts, and they can now rely on one company for public, private and hybrid cloud management regardless of location,” Curry said.
The managed services Rackspace is planning to provide for OpenStack include updates and version upgrades, performance tuning, system-issue analysis, bug fixes, security patches and hot fixes, support for Cloud operations and OpenStack training for developers and system administrators.
