IDC recognizes innovators in relational database software market 2018

2 Mins read

IDC (International Data Corporation) has recognized Clustrix, Cockroach Labs, NuoDB, and Splice Machine as the IDC Innovators for dynamically scalable and alterable relational database software in 2018.

The emerging vendors which generate over $100 million revenue, and have demonstrated either an innovative business model or technology, are considered as the IDC Innovators.

Relational database management systems (RDBMS) are a group of programs that allow enterprises to create, update, administer and interact with a relational database. The enterprise-grade RDBMS generally use SQL to access the database.

The RDBMS helps enterprises to gain flexibility and scalability in the technologies they use. It enhances the utility for complex analysis of real-time data, and supports analytics transaction processing (ATP). The ATP is a combination of online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP).

According to IDC, the technologies built by the IDC innovators provide all the benefits expected by RDBMS, and additionally provide support for dynamic resource and dynamic schema change, and extension of databases across several clusters and regions.

“It is often stated as an article of faith that relational databases can’t scale, but there is nothing about the concept of relational databases that supports that assertion,” said Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software at IDC. “A new class of RDBMSs has overcome the flexibility and scalability obstacles and also supports dynamically adding or removing resources such as processor capacity (nodes) and storage or making dynamic schema changes without interrupting database operations.”

Clustrix is known for its scale-out database called ClustrixDB that scales the database horizontally by adding cores and servers using a shared-nothing architecture. It moves the query to the data, rather than moving data to the query.

Cockroach Labs provides the SQL database for cloud services through CockroachDB. The CockroachDB helps companies to simplify the process of running a distributed database by automatically scaling, rebalancing, and repairing data.

Whereas, NuoDB is an elastic SQL database company for hybrid cloud applications. The NuoDB database system can run on containers, virtual machines, and across on-premises, public and hybrid cloud environments.

Splice Machine is disrupting the traditional database world with a hybrid data platform that unifies streaming, analytics and transactions in a single relational database system, removing latency, cost and complexity from supporting modern big data applications.
