DAILYHOSTNEWS, December 8, 2011 – Emerson is rising to one of the biggest challenges heating up the data center space as a result of the Cloud, with a new floor-mounted chilled water cooling solution it said offers more powerful cooling in any sized data center using up to 65% less energy.
It said it has completely redesigned the way its Liebert cooling system works for the Liebert PCW with a new chassis and internal components for optimized air flow, from the coil angle to the electrical panel.
The result is a floor-mounted solution that can scale from 30kW to 230kW with reduced noise and lower running costs thanks to energy requirements less than those seen in other models.
“The leading-edge technology at the heart of the Liebert PCW has seven pending patents for efficiency, performance and reduce operational costs,” Emerson said.
At the heart of the new Liebert cooling solution for the Cloud is the EC Fan 2.0, a new generation of fan with new automotive high efficiency filters and an ultrasonic humidifier to reduce moisture in the atmosphere.
It also has the iCOM Control smart mode, an algorithm developed for Emerson’s SmartAisle cooling solutions which offers a selection of water connections and modifications for handling, alignment, installation and management.
It can also manage temperature and ensure cooling is working only where and when required in the data center.
Emerson Network Power marketing director for EMEA Stefano Mozzato said cloud computing provides new challenges for cooling the data center.
According to Forrester Research, in its Power and Cooling Heat Up the Data Center report from Q3 this year, cloud has made power and cooling two of the most critical issues in the data center.
“The increase in stored data levels worldwide puts new and never-before seen demands on cooling systems, exposing shortcomings of existing approaches and creating demand for better designed data centers,” Mozzato said.
“When physical resources are leveraged to provide on-demand at-scale access as part of a virtualized network architecture, the degree of variation and rate of change of computing load can be devastating if the system is not set up to withstand it.”
The Liebert PCW cooling solution designed for cloud operations is available now in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
