The shifting sandbox: are Indian GCCs truly running the show?

1 Mins read

For years, the narrative surrounding Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India followed a predictable script: cost arbitrage, talent pools, and execution engine. But a recent LinkedIn pulse check by Nasscom Insights reveals a more nuanced, evolving story about where the true nerve center of global business resides.

The poll asked a critical question: Are GCCs in India becoming the new Nerve Center for HQ decisions?

The results offer a fascinating reality check for the industry.

The clear winner, capturing 57% of the votes, is the middle ground: Partly – HQ still leads. This indicates that while the back-office moniker is long dead, we haven’t completely entered an era of absolute decentralization either. Instead, we are living in a hybrid matrix. Indian GCCs are no longer just receiving orders; they are co-authoring the playbook. Global CXOs are increasingly based out of India, and strategic mandates are born here, yet the final sign-off and macro-steering often remain anchored at corporate headquarters.

Interestingly, 29% of respondents feel that GCCs have already crossed the chasm, boldly asserting that they are driving strategy now. This segment represents the vanguard of GCC evolution, centers that own complete product lines, drive enterprise-wide digital transformations, and anchor global innovation orchestration.

Conversely, a minor 14% still view them as mainly execution centers. This serves as a reminder that the GCC landscape is not monolithic. While some centers operate as peer headquarters, others are still climbing the maturity curve.

The data clearly shows that the pendulum is swinging away from pure execution. Indian GCCs are undeniably in a transition phase, moving from trusted delivery partners to strategic co-pilots. The transformation might not be complete across the board, but the trajectory is irreversible. HQ is still leading, but they are listening closer than ever before.
