IBM Announces New Chairman

IBM, the tech giant, announced on Tuesday Virginia M. Rometty chairman of the board, effective October 1, 2012. Mrs. Rometty succeeds Samuel J. Palmisano, who is stepping down from the board effective October 1, 2012. As per the Company’s press release, Mr. Palmisano will become Senior Adviser to the company until he retires on December 1, 2012. As of October 1, 2012, Mrs. Rometty’s title will be IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer. IBM creates smallest memory bit ever

DAILYHOSTNEWS, January16, 2012 – IBM scientists have successfully demonstrated the ability to store data in 12 magnetic atoms, which is at least 100 times more capacity than today’s disk drives have, the company said Thursday. Disk drives on the market currently use about 1m atoms to store one bit of data. The implications of being able to manipulate matter atom by atom (its most basic known components) are that technology companies will be able to build smaller, faster and more energy-efficient devices, IBM said. IBM wins most patents for 19th straight year

DAILYHOSTNEWS, January 12, 2012 – IBM retained its patent crown for 2011, topping the list of patent winners for the 19th year in a row. The only other U.S. Company to make the top 10, Microsoft fell from third place to sixth place, according to data from IFI Claims Patent Services. Big Blue secured 6,180 patents last year, up nearly 5% from 5,896 in 2010. Samsung Electronics was the second most prolific patent winner, with 4,894 patents received in 2011, followed by Canon (2,821), Panasonic (2,559), Toshiba (2,483), Microsoft (2,311), Sony (2,286), Seiko Epson (1,533), Hon Hai Precision Industry (1,514), and Hitachi (1,465). DAILYHOSTNEWS, January 06, 2012 – Google has acquired another 188 patents and 29 patents pending from IBM, adding to the store of intellectual property it can use to defend itself in lawsuits. The patents, granted in a deal recorded on Friday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, cover databases, mobile phones, server infrastructure and technologies that could play a role in self-driving cars.
