CASE STUDY: Leading Indian web hosting company reins in business costs and enhances revenues with Parallels Virtuozzo Containers

ZNetLive was established in 2002 to provide online business solutions to corporations and individuals. Headquartered in Jaipur, India, it has since grown to become India’s fourth largest web hosting company, operating state-of-art data centers in Dallas, Seattle and Washington D.C. in the United States, and in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore in India. It offers a wide range of services including domain registration, web hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, cloud solutions, business email, web sites, and business applications.

Business challenges

ZNetLive has over 30,000 customers and the base is constantly growing. To support business expansion, ZNetLive needed cost-effective and stable virtualization technology that would allow it to maximize the number of virtual machines on each physical server without compromising performance.

The company had been using hypervisor technology for virtualization on the Linux platform, but this was not cost effective because of the low density of virtual machines that could be created on a single hardware server. This made it difficult for ZNetLive to offer competitive prices for its VPS offerings.

Other problems it faced with hypervisor technology included the lack of stability as well as performance issues which led to the slowdown of customer websites and applications.

Solution

What ZNetLive was looking for was a solution that would enable it to lower the cost of its services by allowing it to create the maximum number of virtual machines on one hardware server, without any detrimental effect on performance or stability.

“We don’t want the performance of our customers’ websites or applications to be compromised in any way. Neither do we want to deploy a solution that will result in a less cost-effective service for our customers. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers helped us address these requirements by delivering a virtualization solution that offers higher density and can be provisioned rapidly while ensuring a high level of performance,” said Munesh Singh Jadoun, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of ZNet.

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is an operating system virtualization solution that helps companies to maximize their investments in server hardware by delivering three times more virtual servers per physical server than hypervisor solutions, enabling more efficient utilization of the existing infrastructure. With the hypervisorapproach to virtualization, every container requires its own operating system, whereas Parallels Virtuozzo Containers requires only one installation of the operating system, resulting in lower overhead.

It is also easy to deploy, with ZNetLive completing the whole process in just 48 hours. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers was installed on the company’s new servers and integrated with ZNetLive’s client management, billing and support system to automate service delivery.

For ZNetLive, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers also came bundled with Parallels Plesk Panel, a complete server control panel and web hosting automation solution for Linux and Windows servers.  It enables small businesses and IT to create and manage websites, email and file shares with an intuitive interface, and enables web hosters and web designers to host and manage websites for their customers and grow revenue with add-on products and services.

Benefits

With Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, ZNetLive has been able to deliver cost-effective services without compromising performance or stability. Customer service has also been enhanced with the rapid provisioning of new services and the ability to add value  with Parallels Plesk Panel.

Reduces business costs

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers delivers three times more virtual servers per physical server than hypervisor solutions, enabling ZNetLive to optimize the use of its infrastructure. The result is an increase in server density which enables ZNetLive to reduce costs not only in terms of hardware investments but also in terms of a lower data center footprint. Reduced energy consumption and less manpower are needed to manage the systems and these savings are then passed on to ZNetLive’s customers in the form of more cost-effective services.

Increases profits

As the number of VPS subscriptions increases for each physical server, so does profitability. Jadoun estimated that Parallels Virtuozzo Containers has also enabled ZNetLive to increase its revenues by about 30-40 per cent per server.

Enables rapid provisioning of services

With Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, a new VPS can be made available within minutes, halving the time that was needed to provision servers in the past. The servers are “instant on” when provisioned, with no boot up time required for the operating system. Existing operating system containers can also be scaled on the fly with real-time adjustments to CPU, memory and disk space allocations.

Reduces manpower effort in system administration

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers enables a small number of system administrators to manage a large number of servers and VPS instances. This is because of centralized management which allows for fast operating system updates and upgrades, and enables changes to be made just once and quickly replicated to the entire datacenter.

Improves performance

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers delivers near-native server performance, improving application performance by 20-30 per cent at ZNetLive and enabling maximum scalability for any given virtual CPU configuration. ZNetLive has thus been able to address the performance and stability issues that it was facing with hypervisor technology.

Delivers greater value to customers

The bundling of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers with Parallels Plesk Panel has also paved the way for ZNetLive to add greater value to its existing suite of services. By offering Plesk to its customers, ZNetLive provides them with a tool to manage a whole range of web-related tasks without the need for technical expertise. These include adding websites and domains, configuring FTP, adding SSL certificates, and server backup, This enables businesses to save time creating websites, managing email addresses, and deploying applications to a server. For example, Parallels Web Presence Builder allows a layman to publish a web site within minutes. Currently, about 10,000 of ZNetLive’s accounts are also taking advantage of thecapabilities of Parallels Plesk Panel.

“We don’t want the performance of our customers’ websites or applications to be compromised in any way. Neither do we want to deploy a solution that will result in a less cost-effective service for our customers. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers helped us address these requirements by delivering a virtualization solution that offers higher density and can be provisioned rapidly while ensuring a high level of performance.”
